The Oxford English dictionary definition of mindfulness is
“A mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”
Mindfulness is also known as Focused Awareness (FA) is good for children as it allows them to have control over their emotions and action rather than just reacting to situations.
Children can suffer from stress which can cause poor behaviour, lack of concentration and other problems. Children are under more pressure to achieve good grades and qualifications so they can get a good job. They can have a strained family life with their parent/s out working to provide a decent standard of living or peer pressure from friends they associate with.
The FA activities we provide can help children escape from the thoughts going round in their minds. They can help them to realise that they are just thoughts and they can be controlled. They can help them pay attention to their
bodies as well as the environment around them.
Our activities can be tailored to suit the age range, class size and available facilities and use popular themes so the children can relate to the activity. For example, the theme from the film Frozen can be used to show that a troubling thought is like a bubble and children can just “Let it go”.
We also use themes from technology like emoticons so children can display how they are feeling without having to talk about it.
